Tangaroa’s workshop on technology and methodologies for assessment and intervention was held in September 2024 over three days with 98 attendees.
Presentations included topics like the impact of oil spills on the environment (Joao Sousa, IUCN), environmental risk assessment for prioritisation of PPWs (Freya Goodsir, CEFAS), examples from Sweden (Fredrik Lindgren) and the US (Doug Helton, NOAA), practical examples from the UK MoD, Finland SKYE, and Japan, the Sunken Ships of the Second World War database (Paul Heersink), and case studies from Chuuk Lagoon, Malta, Waves Group, the Finnish Navy, and the Coimbra. The third day featured a discussion on remediation and management, including operational challenges (Waves Group), oil removal techniques (SMIT), oil spill response (OSRL), wreck monitoring (EDNA), satellite monitoring systems, and example wreck management plans from Finland, Estonia, SPREP, and the UK.
